Viscosupplementation is a medical procedure in which a lubricating fluid called hyaluronic acid is injected into the joint. Hyaluronic acid is an important component for healthy joints. During osteoarthritis, the concentration of hyaluronic acid decreases. Viscosupplementation isn’t a cure for osteoarthritis. However, it does improve the lubricating properties of synovial fluid, which reduces osteoarthritis knee pain while improving mobility.
During the procedure, a small amount of hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the joint, giving a slippery and lubricating quality to the joint fluid. The injection diminishes friction and cushions the joint to improve weight-bearing ability. The injections act slowly but results are long-lasting – up to eight months to one year can be expected.
