Semaglutide – the game changer in sustained weight loss.

Have you been struggling with weight loss or unexplained weight gain? Want an alternative to phentermine and other stimulants? Are you unable to take typical weight loss drugs due to contraindications? Do you have prediabetes? Queue Semaglutide: the game changer in sustained weight loss.

Semaglutide has been prescribed for over a decade to support diabetes management and belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. While the weight loss effects have been known for some time, Semaglutide has proven to be the “best-in-class” GLP-1 RA for weight loss and was approved for weight loss by the FDA under the brand name Wegovy® in June 2021.

How well does Semaglutide work?
Low-dose Semaglutide (1.0mg) once-weekly resulted in an average 11-pound weight loss in 12 weeks.

The New England Journal of Medicine’s publication of the STEP trial revealed more than 50% of trial participants lost 15% of their body weight, and between 33% to 40% are losing 20% of their body weight.

How does Semaglutide work?
Semaglutide emulates the sensation of “feeling full,” leading to reduced caloric intake. It achieves this by slowing down the emptying of the stomach through a glucose-dependent reduction in glucagon secretion. This delayed gastric emptying has the potential to decrease appetite, enhance eating control, and diminish food cravings.

How is Semaglutide administered?

Semaglutide is administered as a once-weekly injection. These injections utilize a tiny needle administered to the abdomen, much like an insulin injection. While Semaglutide is only administered once a week, rest assured that it is working around the clock to suppress your appetite without the stimulant effects of typical weight loss supplements and medications!

Are you a candidate for Semaglutide?
There are only two qualifications for Semaglutide:

  • A BMI over 30 and no weight-related complications
  • A BMI over 27 with weight-related complications

If you are unsure of your BMI, there are resources online to assist you in doing so. If your BMI does not meet the BMI requirements above, you may still qualify pending your body composition shows excess fat, which is determined in our clinic by a medical professional.

Is there anyone who cannot take Semaglutide?
There are rare situations where Semaglutide is contraindicated, such as patients with a personal or family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma or patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2.

Does insurance cover Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is not covered by most Medicare and insurance plans for the purpose of weight loss, but manufacturer and pharmacy coupons can help offset the cost. It currently is ranging from $1300-$1800 a month.

I cannot afford that. Is there any other way?
The good news is YES! Physical Healthcare of Jacksonville has negotiated exclusive pricing on Semaglutide from our preferred compounding pharmacies for on-going use. We also accept HSA plans.
